Fairest of Them All: Two Spellbinding Cocktails Inspired by Disney’s Snow White

 Snow White's (Adriana Caselotti) step mother has it out for her, and her rap sheet includes Evil Queen (Lucille La Verne) and witch.  The Magic Mirror (Moroni Olsen) told the Evil Queen that she is everything but the fairest, because that title belongs to Snow White.  So she sends her Button Man, the Huntsman (Stuart Buchanan) to return when he has Snow White's heart in a box. Upon seeing Snow White, the huntsman could not finish the job, warning Snow White of the danger she was in.  Snow White must flee, and just when things were getting interesting between her and the Handsome Prince (Harry Stockwell).  So she takes refuge with seven small and dirty men Dopey, Grumpy, Bashful, Sneezy, Sleepy, Happy, and Doc (Eddie Collins, Pinto Colvig, Scotty Mattraw, Billy Gilbert, Pinto Colvig, Otis Harlan, and Roy Atwell, respectively).  The Seven Dwarfs spend their days mining precious gem stones while Snow White and her forest friends clean, cook and teach basic hygiene to the Dwarfs.  Snow White settles in and lives a modestly happy life until the Evil Queen learns from the Magic Mirror that Snow White is still alive, so the Witch concocts a potion to put an end to that.    

Our first cocktail is inspired by the potion of the Evil Queen called "Sleeping Death" which she obscures into a beautiful and delicious looking red apple.  Our cocktail has spell-like vibes with Absinthe as the base of this cocktail, to bring out tart fruit flavors, we use Kirsch Liqueur and Dry Vermouth.  For strong apple flavors, we made a Granny Apple Saccharum which boasts of apple flavor and top it off with a Hard Apple Cider (we like one on the dry side).  To add the drama of the Evil Queen's dark purple robes, we infused the Kirsch Liqueur with a heaping amount of Dried Butterfly Pea Flowers and add a black sphere like the Evil Queen's potion, and just like the Evil Queen, we made a candy apple rim by dipping the goblet in the Granny Smith Saccharum and then in red sprinkles.  This drink is full of apple flavor, crisp, and lightly scented with fennel and anise from the Absinthe.  It won't make you fall into a Sleeping Death, but like Snow White, it will make you want to come in for another bite. 

Snow White's charms and dreamy affection for the Handsome Prince do save the day, which is exactly what Snow White wants reflected in her song "Someday My Prince Will Come".  We took that winsome, rosy song and made "Someday" a cocktail based on Snow White.  This cocktail has a smooth, almost buttery sweet and berry tart flavor as a base for the rose floral note that comes from the rose water, DeKuyper Sloe Gin and Lemon Oleo Saccharum in a base of Coconut Rum.  Shake it with some aquafaba to give it a silky texture and a pretty pink foam to trace a Snow White bow out of Peychaud's bitters on top.  A drink that is beautiful, delicious and sweet, just like Snow White when she's singing "Someday".
