Boogie Nights: A Dazzling Dive into the Rise and Fall of 1970s Porn Stardom and Two Cocktails Inspired By It.

This dazzling dive needed two dazzling cocktails. Boogie Nights is a continuation of the short film “The Dirk Diggler Story” by Paul Thomas Anderson, the writer and director of Boogie Nights. Boogie Nights premiered in 1997 as an American drama with comedic elements. Set in the late 1970’s L.A. California, Eddie Adams, played by Mark Wahlberg, is a dropout working as a bus boy when he is noticed for his looks by adult film producer Jack Horner, played by Burt Reynolds. When it is made apparent that Eddie is already comfortable exploiting his other “talents”, Jack Horner recruits him into the adult film world. Surrounded by a talented industry troupe, played by Heather Graham, Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Dirk Diggler, Eddie’s stage name sees incredible rise of success which leads to habits that contribute to his quick and dramatic downfall.

Our first cocktail recipe is the Dirk Diggler. Ever feel the pain of being at the bottom then the sweet taste of success only to take a dive towards the sours of life choices? That sums up the life of Eddie Adams, played by Mark Wahlberg, over the course of 30 years. The Dirk Diggler cocktail will deliver it to you over the course of the cocktail. Inspired by the life of Eddie Adams also known as Dirk Diggler the recipe requires a little bit of preparation the day before, but is otherwise very simple and delivers a cocktail that is visually appealing and its flavors continue to develop and change, just like Eddie Adams. The drink starts with the hot popping candy rim, which not only provides an exciting sparkling sensation, the capsaicin in the cayenne will actually trigger heat detection and pleasure centers in the brain. This lays the platform for the sweet, sparkling flavors of the Sparkling Sweet Wine and the Elderflower Liqueur along with flavors from the Dry Vermouth, Cointreau, and the Rhubarb Bitters, these all help add brightness, balance out the sweetness and enhance the flavors of the Sparkling Wine. Towards the bottom of the cocktail, you will begin to notice a subtle, then progressively stronger citrus flavor from the lemon. This is from the lemon ice cube prepared the night before, so the amount of citrus you get from it depends on how long the drink sits. Either way, while the lemon juice is tart, it still works out to being a good cocktail. Just like Eddie Adams.

The second cocktail recipe is based on the Horner Productions starlet Roller Girl which is really the best cocktail recipe balancing the porn star martini and our favorite fruity margarita! Brandy, who goes by the name “Roller Girl ” on film, is a beautiful girl whose signature look is her long blonde hair and the roller skates that she never takes off. We couldn’t resist the urge to use colors and flavors from the famed Porn Star Martini and turn it into a Margarita, because in this movie, there’s nothing more iconic at a pool party than a porn star and a margarita! The signature passion fruit flavor and a sparkling rose is really what makes a porn star martini. We use a Cheap, Sparkling Rose for the bubbly sensation and to brighten the flavors of the overall cocktail, which is fitting for Roller Girl’s general demeanor. For the passion fruit, we used both Chinola Passion Fruit Liqueur and Passion Fruit Puree which give the cocktail a silky texture with a tropical fruit sweetness filled with flavor and pleasure. The hidden hero here is the Vanilla Simple Syrup which give the cocktail a floral, buttery flavor. Finally, we did want to make this a margarita, so we must have Tequila! We recommend a Reposado, which has more body and depth than a Blanco and can stand up to the flavors of the passion fruit.  A mezcal could be used as a substitute if you like the additional smoky and leather flavors that it provides.  We recommend serving this in a large Margarita glass with two tenderly-handled spheres of ice rather than crushed, and be sure to serve it with a turbinado sugar rim on one side and a course salt rim on the other because we know Roller Girl likes it both ways.

Boogie Nights gives an interesting peek into a world not fully understood by many. While the overall character of the movie is based around the drama of Eddie Adam’s life, the co-stars in this film really make it a fun watch. John C. Reilly, Phillip Seymore Hoffman, Don Cheadle and William H. Macy bring in just the right kind and amount of humor that keeps the movie interesting and fun to watch, while Burt Reynolds, and Julianne Moore give an incredible performance as “La gallina vecchia fa buon brodo” , or, “An old hen makes good broth.” - and they know it.
