Into the Jungle of Flavor: Apocalypse Now Inspires a Pair of Cocktails That Burn Bright and Linger in the Dark
Apocalypse Now drifts downriver into the hallucinatory heart of the Vietnam War, following Captain Benjamin Willard (Martin Sheen), a burned-out operative sent on a secret mission to eliminate a rogue officer. As Willard journeys deeper into the jungle, the war around him grows increasingly surreal, punctuated by the swaggering madness of Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall) and his infamous love of chaos. The mission’s target, Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), emerges as a shadowy figure who has built his own brutal kingdom beyond the reach of command. What begins as a military objective dissolves into a psychological descent, blurring the line between sanity and savagery. In the end, the film becomes less about war itself and more about the darkness lurking within human nature, delivered in a fever dream of sound, fire, and moral collapse.
Napalm In The Morning cocktail reflects the landscape and the madness that Captain Willard realized the moment Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore said, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning". The moment starts with a warm orange and yellow morning sky over the deep green forest of Vietnam then the helicopters start to drop the napalm into the forest turning the sky to flames and leaving a purple haze of noxious gas. To reflect this landscape, this cocktail is built in a tall Collins glass green on the bottom, Chaos erupts on the shoreline as the troops on both sides of the line advance on one another, film crews are deployed to capture the moment, and Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore is ordering his men to grab their boards and surf Charlie's point even though "it's pretty hairy out there." This chaos in the cocktail starts with a buzzing top layer of Butterfly Pea Infused Brandy Mixed with Buzz Button Liqueur from Tingala and Pineapple Juice then progresses into madness with High Proof Moonshine mixed with Ginger Liqueur and Blood Orange Juice. Finally, it finishes with a surprisingly sweet end, just like Colonel Kurtz wanted as he becomes a martyr to his cause.
The Horror, the final words of Colonel Kurtz and the name of our second cocktail which marbles dessert flavors of the Vietnam region as well as colors used in this cinematic moment of Apocalypse Now. The bottom layer is a deep purple of Ube Syrup and Soju while the top layer, Mango Chinola, Coconut Rum and Whole Rice Milk. The layers are marbled together to display the high contrast of mixing together Colonel Kurtz's ideology that in order to find true freedom, one must embrace true horror and that moral judgement is hypocritical, and primal instincts are truth. As Captain Willard confronts Colonel Kurtz with his true purpose for being there, Kurtz emphasizes his philosophical teachings by telling the captain, "You have a right to kill me... but you have no right to judge me." - Something Captain Willard wrestled with throughout his trip on the river. In his final moments, Kurtz utters, "The Horror, the horror" as if to release Captain Willard from his chains of morality and usher him into the freedom of his savagery.
Like Apocalypse Now itself, these cocktails trace a slow, intoxicating descent—from the vivid, explosive layers of “Napalm in the Morning” to the haunting, marbled depths of “The Horror.” Each drink mirrors the film’s unraveling psyche, blending tropical brightness with volatile heat and uneasy sweetness to capture the collision of beauty and brutality. 1 oz (30mL) Moonshine
.75 oz (22.5mL) Ginger Liqueur
.5 oz (15mL) Blood Orange Juice
.25 oz (7.5mL) Agave
1 oz (30mL) Midori
.5 oz (15mL) Butterfly Brandy Luxardo Infusion
.5 oz (15mL) Pineapple Juice
.25 oz (7.5mL) Tingala

Combine in a shaker tin 1 oz Moonshine, .75 Ginger Liqueur, .5 oz Blood Orange Juice and .25 oz Agave. Add Ice, Shake until chilled. In a collins glass, stir together 1 oz Midori and dropper of saline. Add collins spheres and strain cocktail over Melon Layer. Combine in a shaker tin .5 oz Butterfly Brandy Luxardo Infusion, .5 oz Pineapple Juice, and .25 oz Tingala. Add ice, stir for 1 minute. Strain into glass, enjoy without a straw.

2 oz (60mL) Maraschino Liqueur
1 Tbsp (30 g) Butterfly Pea Flowers
Combine Brandy, Maraschino Liqueur and Butterfly Pea Flowers in a sealable container. Shake to combine and store to steep in a dark place at room temperature for 24 hours. Strain out the flowers and store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.

1.5 oz (45mL) Soju
.75 oz (22.5mL) Ube Syrup
1.5 oz (45mL) Mango Chinola
.75 oz (22.5mL) Coconut Rum
.5 oz (15mL) "Whole" Rice Milk
Dropper Saline

In a mixing glass, combine 1.5 oz Soju, .75 oz Ube Syrup, and a dropper of Saline. Add Ice and stir until chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe.
In a shaker tin, combine 1.5 oz Mango Chinola, .75 oz Coconut Rum, and .5 oz Cold Rice Milk. Add ice, cover and shake until chilled. Strain into coupe with your best barista skills to make it wavy.
Add drops of Angostura Bitters on top and streak through the top.
